The School of Pharmaceutical Engineering is one of the schools with the longest history of Shenyang Pharmaceutical University, dating back to the days when it was called the Department of Pharmaceutical Manufacturing and the university was called Northeastern Pharmaceutical College. It was formally established in 1949 with the approval of Northeastern Executive Committee of P. R. China.
On November 20, 1931, the predecessor of Shenyang Pharmaceutical University, "Medical School for Chinese Red Army Military" was founded in Ruijin, Jiangxi Province. In October 1932, it was renamed the "Chinese Red Army Health School" and began enrolling the first class. In April 1939, we began to organize advanced pharmaceutical classes. In September 1940, the school changed its name to "China Medical University", and the graduated students were able to prepare chemicals such as phenyrene, iron sulfate and sodium sulfate in chemical lab, which was organized in a small exhibition. In July 1947, a drug research laboratory was set up by Zaiyun Long, Zhenkai Hu and their colleagues, to synthesize sulfonamide drug, make liver paste from pig liver, prepare liver semen injection, and improve the sugar preparation process, etc. In September, the school changed its name to "Northeast Pharmaceutical Special School". In December, the experimental procedure for preparing sulfonamide was finished, which was produced in scale in Northeast Pharmaceutical Company in Jiamus to meet the urgent needs of the liberation war. Zhenkai Hu and colleagues were awarded by the Northeast Democratic Union Ministry of Health.
In October 1948, Department of Pharmaceutics, Department of Pharmaceutical, and Department of Analytics, were established for teaching plan, accounting for one year, two years and two years, respectively. At the same time, more than 40 outstanding students were selected to enter Department of Pharmaceutical synthesis, beginning to study math, physics, chemistry, and other basic courses.
In November 1948, the school moved to Shenyang, and renamed School of Pharmacy of The Chinese Medical University after received the Department of Pharmacy of Shenyang Medical College. In April 1949, the school changed its name to "Northeastern College of Pharmacy" to meet the needs of building a new type of regularized university. On August 18, in accordance with the "81 Decision" of the Northeast Bureau and the Northeast Administrative Committee, the school set up three departments, with a four-year academic system and the implementation of undergraduate education, with the aim for training of higher specialized personnel in medicine.
Department of Pharmaceutical opened pharmaceutical major, which began to recruit undergraduate students. In August 1955, the Department of Pharmacy of Zhejiang Medical College and the Department of Pharmacy of Shandong Medical College were merged into our university. On September 1, 1956, the school was renamed into Shenyang Pharmaceutical College. On August 1, 1958, Shenyang Pharmaceutical Industry School was merged into our university. Since then, the Department of Pharmaceutical has three undergraduate majors in chemical pharmaceutical technology, antimicrobial manufacturing process, and chemistry. In 1962, the antimicrobial major was ordered to close in accordance with the adjusted guidelines, until the resumption of enrollment in 1974. In 1979, antimicrobial major has made great progress in teaching and scientific research based on microbial pharmaceutical major. Department of Pharmaceutical began to enroll master's and doctoral students in medicinal chemistry in 1956 and 1984, respectively. In 1984 and 1998, we began to enroll master's and doctoral students in microbiology and biochemical medicine, respectively.
Currently the School of Pharmaceutical Engineering comprises of two departments, which is the Department of Medicinal Chemistry and the Department of Pharmaceutical Engineering and Environmental Sciences. Within the two departments, there are five sections that each consists of tens of faculty members and are mainly responsible for teaching and research. There are also two experimental teaching centers that are mainly responsible for teaching students how to perform modern chemical and pharmaceutical experiments. The school is certified to recruit postdoctoral fellows and to grant PhD degrees in medicinal chemistry and pharmaceutical engineering. It is also certified to grant master's degrees in the following programs: medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutical engineering, biological engineering, applied chemistry, chemical process, chemical engineering, environmental engineering, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, macromolecular chemistry etc. There are four undergraduate programs, which are pharmaceutical engineering, environmental sciences, applied chemistry and medicinal chemistry. Among them, chemical engineering is one of the top national programs and applied chemistry is one of the top provincial programs.
